Herbs to Balance the Chakras

The word “chakra” comes from the Sanskrit term for “wheel” or “disk,” representing the spinning energy centers along the spine.

The Vedas don't explicitly describe the chakra system as it is known today but contain early ideas about energy pathways, known as nadis, and life force energy (prana) that move through the body. This laid the groundwork for later philosophical developments that would more clearly define the chakras.

As Indian spiritual systems evolved, particularly with the rise of Tantra and yogic practices in the early centuries CE, the chakra system became more clearly outlined. Tantra, which places significant emphasis on the body's role in spiritual practice, elaborated on the chakras as focal points where prana (life force energy) gathers and circulates, thus influencing physical, emotional, and spiritual health.

By the 1960s and 1970s, the chakra system became integrated into broader New Age beliefs that emphasized holistic healing, the integration of body and spirit, and personal transformation. Practices like Reiki, crystal healing, and guided chakra meditations became popular, often blending chakra knowledge with other spiritual and metaphysical systems.

In this context, the chakras were often presented as a map for personal and spiritual growth, moving from the Root Chakra (focused on survival and basic needs) to the Crown Chakra (associated with spiritual enlightenment). This Western interpretation was somewhat simplified compared to the complex and nuanced systems found in Indian traditions, but it resonated with a growing interest in holistic wellness, energy healing, and spiritual exploration. It’s important to refer back to the cultural roots and keepers of this ancient wisdom, especially in today’s age of appropriation and theft.

Below are the nine chakras based on the energy systems along the spine and above and below it.
